It’s time to wrap up this last week’s mix pack. I gotta say, we are getting pretty good at picking out some decent brews each week. It seems the mix packs keep getting better and better. Founder’s All Day IPA led us off in our last post so hitting in the 2 hole (errr, leading off the day I guess, either way, it’s SEC Tournament time for the Yardcocks so I’m in baseball mode, also the best of luck wished to the Golfcocks as they prepare for Nationals this week in Oregon) will be……
Bell’s Oberon Ale! This is the second time we have reviewed Bell’s on this blog and as I tweeted when I sampled it, I don’t know if Bell’s makes a bad beer. In fact, I enjoyed this so much, Kendall and I ordered it at Old Chicago on Sunday for lunch.
It smells like Summer. That’s the best way to describe it. It has a nice sweetness to it, but if I had to compare it to Blue Moon, it doesn’t have the syrupy feel that Blue Moon brings. It also does not need a fruit to go along with it. Put this in your cooler at the beach because it’s a good one.
Up next we have DuClaw’s Morgazm. First off, it’s an awesome name for a beer, and is the second fruit beer we have sampled here on Pick 6 (click for the first). Morgazm is apparently a fruited up version of DuClaw’s Blonde Ale with added grapefruit zest to give it a citrusy flavor. At no point while drinking this beer did I detect grapefruit. That doesn’t mean it’s bad or anything. It is kind of refreshing and I really want to try their Blonde Ale to see how it sits on its own. It does have a tart finish and the website tells you it will leave you wanting more. It did leave me wanting more. A little more flavor.
Next up we have the Hi-Wire Lager. I was really looking forward to this one as I’m a big fan of lagers. Maybe I chilled the glass too much, but this did not make a good first impression on me. The first sip I had I made me grimace. That being said, it got better as I drank it. The aftertaste was very inconsistent sip to sip, which is a first for me. Sometimes it would finish clean and sometimes it would linger. I didn’t hate it, but honestly I think Budweiser tastes better.
Batting cleanup today is River Rat’s American Kolsch Story. And I’m glad we have this in the cleanup spot because once again (and again), River Rat produces a fantastic beer. They won an award for the Pilsner but I think this one is better. It has summertime beer written all over it. Refreshing, delicious, with a solid finish, this brewery continues to impress. I think it’s time we have a date night at River Rat…..
Last we have the Orange Blossom Pilsner. You down with OBP? Well, sort of. Brian first introduced me to it and I remember being intrigued with it. After sampling it in the mix pack I have mixed feelings (#pun). On the one hand, I liked it. On the other hand, I felt like it could be so much better. I can taste the honey for sure and it is refreshing to an extent. It just seems to be lacking something that I can’t put my finger on (this is becoming a theme). It’s smooth but I just feel like there could be more to it.
Alright, that’s a wrap. We’re going to do something a little different to close out the week. I keep reading about how beer glasses make the difference and we’re going to put that theory to test. We’ll be picking up some IPAs tomorrow and play around with different beer glasses to see how they alter the flavoring. Kendall will blog the results.
